Teaching Portfolio
Student Work
The following sections describe example projects, and the galleries show student work. These examples are all from students grade 9-12, as that is what most of my teaching experience is in. I am a firm believer in having choice-based lessons, so most of my projects have material/skill requirements, but do not have much limitation on theme or student expression.
AP Studio Art 2D/3D/Drawing
I teach all 3 portfolios of AP Studio Art. The following works are highlights from their portfolios, which fit their sustained investigation themes. These students get some guidance with process, and materials, but mainly the class is about experimentation, developing a unified body of work, and their own self expression.
Intermediate Ceramics
In intermediate ceramics students learn more complex sculpting techniques - Our main units are: 1) Learning more in depth on the wheel. 2) Learning glaze components and how to mix their own glaze. 3) Collaborating with each other to create a ceramics installation project. 4) Refining their sculpting techniques to create a matching set of mugs. 5) Learning the slip casting method.
Beginning Ceramics
In Beginning Ceramics I focus on building foundational skills, and practicing the use of ceramics vocabulary. My main 4 units are: 1) Learning to make a pinch pot+rolling coils - and creating a functional piece with it. 2) Multiple methods of making slabs, and additive+subtractive sculpting techniques. 3) Glazing techniques with both glossy and underglaze. 4) A summative project that shows their growth, or they can try the wheel!
Animation
I designed this animation course based on the courses I took in my undergrad degree. This class is taught using Adobe Animate, iArtBook (comparable to Procreate), or FlipaClip. Units include: 1- An introduction to the Principles of Animation. 2) A bouncing Ball animation. 3) A walk cycle animation. 4) Character design and character sheets. 5) Storyboarding and animatics.
Computer Graphics
I haven't taught computer graphics for 5 years, but I create computer artwork on my own time and feel confident I could still teach this class. These examples are from 2017 or prior. Units for that included: 1) Atmospheric perspective landscapes in Photoshop. 2) Surreal photo editing in Photoshop. 3) Shepard Fairey style portait posters in Illustrator. 4) Logo design and company branding in In Design.
